Welding is my favorite part of the day
Welding is my favorite part of the
day because once that helmet drops the bullshit stops. All I am focused on is laying a bead and not
gettin the rod stuck, and when I am making a coupon all im focused on is lining
them up and making sure they’re even. All
I think about when I am welding is just welding nothing else, not the fight that
I had with my parents or the drama of life or even the bullshit I have to put
up with every single day.
When the helmet drops the bullshit
stops, it is the truest statement ever made.
When I drop my helmet, all the people around me disappear, my
surroundings disappear. Once my helmet
is dropped, I don’t even hear the people in the shop, all I hear is the sound
of the almost sizzling sound of layin that bead, all I can think about is
runnin that bead and not gettin the rod stuck.
When I drop my helmet I zone out,
for all I know there could be a fire and I wouldn’t even know it. Even when I lift my helmet up all I think
about is getting that slag off and cleanin up my weld and getting prepared to
run anothah. Granted I sometimes get a
little bit mad when I get the rod stuck to my piece or coupon, and I may or may
not throw my muffed up rod across the shop or at the wall or throw it on the
floor and loose my marbles for a quick second.
Nevertheless, once I finally get back in control my mind goes back to
welding and layin down another bead.
Then I focus in on grabbin that rod and puttin it in the clip, striking
that rod on my vertical or on my coupon.
Once I strike that rod, I run that
bead making little circles till the finish.
After I’ve finished runnin my bead, I drop the rod in my triangular
bucket and then I put my safety glasses on and then I take that chippin hammah and
chip all of that slag off my bead. After
I’ve gotten all the slag off my piece, I then flip the chippin hammah over and
use the brush to make my piece look nice and pretty. Then I start all over, again and again, until
I can get it perfect, then go, and get certified. When I drop my helmet, I am calm and relaxed,
even on my worst days evah. No matter
how tired I am in the morning once I walk through those doors to the shop I am
alert and focused. When I am in welding
nothin can bring me down, I don’t think about anything else beside layin beads,
chippin slag, and throwing some good ole sparks. Even when I’m takin a break to let my piece
cool down my mind is set on gettin back, layin some more beads, and fill up my
coupon.
Upta Camp Part 2
Saturday morning I woke up at
about 7:00am, Matt was already drinking, he made about two or three pots of
coffee, and we drank every last drop.
Then once we drank all that
coffee we took a piss, we loaded up the four wheelah with traps and set out on
the lake, and drilled more holes.
We
weren’t seeing any flags so we went for a ride up to the top of the camp road and
we got in to the truck to go get a six-pack of beer. When we returned we visited one of Matt’s
friends, of course knowing Matt he drank five out of the six within half an
hour. After a while we made our way back
down the camp road to camp, we went and checked the traps…. There were no fish on the lineL.
Before
nightfall, he was rather quite drunk. He
decided we should go out on the snowmobile for a late night ride, we got out on
the ice and I couldn’t see shit it looked like we’re about to take off in a
star wars ship. The snow felt like
shards of glass, I had to put my facemask down.
He told me to hold on I was like oh shit then he gunned her and we went
braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap braaaaaaaaaapp braaaaaaaaap braaaaaap braaaaap baaap baap
“OH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!” as we com up on one ski a and almost flipped her
over. We almost hit a little train
bridge he said. We eventually stopped
in
the middle of the lake and took in the beauty of this beautiful night although
we got lost and hit every cove we finally made it to back ta camp.
It
was Sunday and we had to leave, we got up real early so we could make it home
fairly early. Im asleep and then I hear
matt yell, “nick we need to get the F***** wheelah unstuck”. I was like oh crap, I got it stuck from when
we were comin in from pulling traps late the pervious night.
We
got it unstuck; shutoff the power to the camp loaded everything into the
wheelah and the snowmobile. I got on the
snowmobile and went about 40 up the camp road and matt took the wheelah so it
wouldn’t get stuck. We got up to the top
of the camp road at Matts friends house, where everything was, and loaded up
the trailer and the truck. We said
goodbye to his friend, got into the truck, and headed home L.
